Appaloosas are the famous equine mounts of the Nez Perce people. They were originally found in the Palouse Valley of Oregon, and from this place the breed takes its name.
The Native Americans believed these to be powerful medicine or spirit horses and that the spots represented raindrops or gifts from the spirits that live in the clouds. The more colorful your horse, the more magic it brought its rider. |
