The Clydesdale is an immensely strong yet graceful breed that can often grow to a height of seventeen hands. Originally bred in Scotland by crossing local mares to heavier Flemish stallions, these sturdy animals soon found their way to America where reliable draught horses were a commodity of enormous value. This loyal breed helped build our nation; therefore, this Jody Bergsma painting was named "Spirit of Freedom". The painting is based on sketches of horses maintained and trained in the traditional Clydesdale fashion by Sea World in Florida.
